The region is divided into two distinct sections - Alto Leblon, or 'Higher Leblon', and Baixo Leblon, or 'Lower Leblon'.

The higher section is entirely residential, and is the where a significant swathe of Rio's elite reside, including a number of celebrities - The lower region of the district is more commercial and upper-middle class oriented, this is where an impressive spread of glamorous eateries, bars, and designer stores abound.

The golden shores of Leblon are straddled on either side by the morro dois irmãos (Two Brothers Mountain), and ipanema beach - the leblon section of sand is considered one of the cleanest and safest amongst residents, and is frequented by the elite classes of the city as well as families, particularly because of the existence of 'Baixo Babe' at posto 12, which is an enclosed and safe playground for young children.
