Presented by the SIGEP - Comissão Brasileira de Sítios Geológicos e Paleobiológicos, the study Pão de Açucar RJ - cartão postal geológico do brasil - (Sugar Loaf, Rio Janeiro -The geological post card of Brazil), by Luiz Carlos da Silva and Antônio José Lopes de Andrade Ramos shows how pão de açúcar (Sugar Loaf) Hill and corcovado provide the backdrop to some of the most renowned and beloved postcard images of Rio de Janeiro city, and the whole of Brazil. The fact that Sugar Loaf mountain has been named PÃO DE AÇÚCAR GEOLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL NATIONAL SITE reflects also its importance for geological and geomorphologic studies in and of Brazil.

The granite of the pão de açúcar mountain, which belongs to the Rio de Janeiro suite of mountains,  has only recently had its magmatic structure investigated and unraveled.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
