the 20th century brought a new phase of construction and urbanization and the eventual creation of the current look of the city. from the 1960s forward, there was a tendency to create malls and other purely commercial areas. several local favelas also developed during these years, a fact which eventually lessened the image of the center or rio. this is something the local administration addressed since the dawn of the 21st century. during this whole time, the means of transportation evolved along with the city, creating a network of subways and buses which cross the entire central zone. there is a great amount of roads and the region also holds the central train station of rio de janeiro. |
