after leaving the tea trade, many former tea workers settled in farms around what is today the vista chinesa, a mirantes with one of the most spectacular views in the city, so named to tribute the chinese presence in the area at that time.

the next wave of chinese immigration in brazil only happened after the second world war, when nearly a quarter million chinese immigrants settled between rio de janeiro and são paulo, with about 20 thousands living in rio.

currently, many chinese small traders operate successful commercial establishments in the center of rio, in the saara shopping district - whilst still not as popular as coffee, tea can be found in many locations around the city.

there are numerous tea rooms dotted around, many of which are designed in an old european style, as well as specialty shops with a nice range of leaves.          arrow-back      arrow-forward
