crêpes have an old and rich history, with records dating back to the first century by the roman cook apicius - there is a certain degree of controversy over the origin, as the italians claim that they were first conceived on their soil by french pilgrims in the fifth century.

the first crêpe recipe ever recorded comes from france, in 1390, and the 'crêpe' itself is a french word meaning 'curly', which refers to the curled shape the pastry forms during the cooking process.

crêpes are a versatile food, the quality and taste of which are very much determined by the filling - the original pastry recipe contains wheat flour, eggs, milk, water, sugar and vanilla.

a galette is the savory sibling of the crêpe, often eaten with cheesy fillings, as well as meat, tomatoes and vegetables - when the crêpe originally arrived in brazil, it was considered a sophisticated and up-market delicacy, reminiscent of the chic parisian lifestyle, which only the affluent in the city had access to.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
