at a glance

a typical and very carioca name for hamburgers sold at random stands across rio is x-tudo, with the letter 'x' being a short and easy way to pronounce a word similar to the original english word 'cheese', and 'tudo' meaning 'everything' as this burgers are usually served with a variety of other ingredients spanning from bacon to corn.

with time the word 'x' was applied to just about all carioca burgers, giving birth to 'x-queso' (x-cheese), 'x-bacon', and many more.

another very carioca way of referring to burgers stuffed with everything is 'podrão', loosely translatable as 'big-rotten', jokingly referring to the assumption that the quality of the ingredients in these sandwiches is probably not the best - an example of typical carioca humor.

although cariocas are aware that these are not always the healthiest option, people do treat themselves to a swift and mouth-watering snack when the urge strikes - fast food is the deliciously tantalizing double-edged culinary sword of the food market.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
