going by car  can be complicated since  navigating through niterói's streets can be difficult, even with a gps. the car ride to niterói includes crossing the longest bridge in brazil, the ponte rio-niterói which, as the name implies, connects the two cities. the bridge is 13 km (8 miles) long, and includes a toll of a few reals to be paid on the way into niterói.
