at a glance

with the help of the brazilian slaves holland won the war - after this time freed slaves began colonizing in hard to reach places - this is where capoeira truly became a force to be reckoned with. the slaves were free to practice and militias sprang up throughout brazil -  capoeira practitioners were used as bodyguards, hitmen, and spies - this movement caused capoeira to become outlawed in rio de janeiro in the 1800's.

capoeira practitioners once again went into hiding, and the practice was restricted until the 1920s. many different styles of capoeira existed in the 1600s - participants came from a variety of regions in african and styles of combat and music differed accordingly.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
