the introduction of indoor ice rinks into warm countries allowed ice skating to move to tropical areas such as rio de janeiro. brasil is not traditinaly recognized as a country with strong athletes in winter sporting events - given the warm temperatures of the country, winter activities are rare or almost inaccessible to its residents

up until today brasil is yet to recieve a medal in a winter sporting event in the olympics or an internationl ice skating championship. in 2007 stephanie gardner became the first brazilian figure skater to represent the country in an international competition - at the international skating union's (isu) four continents competition stephanie placed 26th.
