at a glance

following the cup the stadium remained an important part of the Brazilian sportive landscape, hosting important games between the most important of the national teams.

in 19 july 1992, though, a grave incident forced an overhaul to the building - leading to plans to demolish the stadium, but as it was classified as national landmark it was preserved intact.

there were other important renovation efforts, the most recent being the one currently in course in order to prepare it for the 2014 fifa world cup.

these works reduced its seated capacity to about 80.000 spectators, although the accommodations are now much more comfortable and safe than before.   arrow-back     arrow-forward
