the placid waters of the lagoonsand of  guanabara bayfacilitated the pursuit of the sport and several clubs were created back then to compete against each other.

the sportive tradition of such clubs would eventually open their way to embrace soccer once the sport finally arrived in the country.

this is also why many carioca soccer teams are named regatas (boat races) teams.
