in 1942 the soccer and the canoeing institutions decided to merge to create a bigger sportive organization.
it was at this point that the botafogo de futebol e regatas was born.
although its current form is somewhat recent, it is usual to consider the foundation of the canoeing club as its starting point, which made the 'fogăo' (bog fire), its main nickname with the public, and the oldest sportive organization still active in rio de janeiro.
