the first person responsible for proposing the building of a religious monument in the city was pedro maria boss, a priest who asked princess isabel, 'the redemptress', to finance the project in the 1850s.   

princess isabel postponed the possibility of funding the idea, eventually dismissing it completely in 1889 when brasil became a republic, with a distinct separation between church and state.
