the trail starts at largo do bom retiro, the first part is very easy, with  a clearly marked and well defined path surrounded by the impressive mata atlântica.

eventually the trail becomes a bit harder, when it meets the trail to morro da cocanha and both hands are necessary to hold to roots and rocks, the walk becomes more steep and it is particularly difficult to hike in less than ideal wheather or after heavy rains.

there is an alternative trail to reach bico do papagaio, which is normally used to descend from the top. its called caminho da serrilha or serrilha do joão antônio, it is a bit harder but has magnificent views that make up for the effort.
