at a glance

formerly known as pedra redonda ('round rock'), pedra do conde (count's rock) is named in honor of aymar marie jacques gestas, farmer and trader of fruit, wine, coffee and exotic liqueurs during the early 19th century.

dom pedro i, founder and first ruler of the empire of brazil, became friends with count gestas, captivated by the delicious strawberries grown is his property, and also by his commercial prosperity.

the count initiated the planting of coffee in the area, which depleted the tijuca forest within a few decades, leading to its replanting 150 years ago. located in the district of alto da boa vista, pedra do conde is known as the easiest mountain to hike within the tijuca forest.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
