coinciding with world environment day, the parque estadual dos três picos was established on june 5th, 2002, by state decree 31,343. it was chosen as a particularly important site for a state park, as its location enables it to act as an ecological corridor, linking important areas of the atlantic forest, and encouraging regional biodiversity and regeneration.

within the park, the aim is to preserve and recover the surviving remnants of the natural environment, paying special attention to the rare and endangered species that live within, and the delicate ecosystems that exist on many levels of its environment. a secondary objective is to encourage recreational, educational, and scientific activities, which are compatible with the goals of the park, aiming to give the region its own sustainable economy.
