the lagoon itself is excellent for water sports, such as sailing, rowing and water-skiing. a trail for cyclists and runners surrounds the entire lagoon - with an extension of some 7.5 kilometers.

due to industrial activity in the area in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and poor urban planning in subsequent years, the water quality of the lagoon declined significantly. at the beginning of the 1970s the lagoon had lost nearly one half of its original surface area to sedimentation.
