being almost exclusively frequented by cariocas, this beach gives a truly authentic feel of rio de janeiro's beach life away from the more international copacabana and ipanema beach - easily accessible via public transportation, the closest subway stop is estação flamengo, even though it is not very close to the sand. 

many buses passing through ipanema and copacabana go along the aterro do flamengo, run very frequently, and would be a better choice. flamengo beach and the aterro are not considered safe after sunset, exception made for nights following special events such as new year's eve fireworks and concerts.
