The artistic
project covers a total of fifteen lifeguard stations (called
postos)between
Arpoador and Recreio, and is linked to the GaleRio initiative,
in which 40 kilometers of subway are being transformed into the
largest urban art gallery in the world.
The
lifeguard stations depict sinuous waves, the faces and
basking bodies of beachgoers, coconuts, sarongs, and everything
else quintessential to the carioca coast.
In the graffiti on each
lifeguard tower there are
also allusions to life in the neighborhood, such as sports being
played or other local landmarks.
