at a glance

Maré (complexo da maré) was made a neighborhood in 1994, and comprises 16 micro-neighborhoods, almost all of which can be considered favelas.

It is considered the largest collection of communities in Rio, home to around 130,000 residents, and is situated in the north of the city, on the outskirts of the guanabara bay.

There are plenty of impressive and expressive pieces all over the Complexo do Maré, which speak to the struggles, vibrancy and everyday life of its inhabitants.

For visitors wishing to take a graffiti city tour, the company rio street art tour specializes in showing some of rio de janeiro's best murals, and can be contacted via email on this link - on this page we publish some of the graffiti we documented around rio de janeiro, including works of art in copacabana, ipanema, botafogo, lapa, lagoa, jardim botânico, gávea, favelas, são cristóvão, centro, and urca.
