Other beautiful pieces line the walls and buildings of the community, including representations of the favela itself, creating a meta-aesthetic. Other pieces creatively raise awareness about conscientious waste disposal - in fact, graffitis are often used across the city to convey social messages, ranging from care for the environment to the dangers of illegal drugs. In the community of providência, a mural was produced in homage to Maria das Dores Alves, more popularly known as Dona Dodó, the very first standard bearer in the history of the Escola de Samba Portela, or 'Portela Samba School', one of the most important and traditional carnival presences in rio de janeiro's parades. |
