similar in some ways to the shrimp festival in cabo frio, the festival de frutos do mar de rio das ostras is very unique in others - some of which include wine tastings and cooking workshops in addition to a broader overall seafood focus.

occupying most of the month of november, the seafood festival is an excellent way to kick off springtime in the southern hemisphere, sample fresh seafood from the best local restaurants and meet renowned chefs as they demonstrate their newest recipes. 

prizes are awarded to participating restaurants with regards to taste, temperature, creativity, presentation and service.  

in april the city celebrates its independence, and this year a nine day celebration of the date will live up the city with free shows and performances.
