cariocas have a great affinity with the 'bairro', or neighborhood, in which they live, always the first to sing its praises, eulogize about its unique features, and highlight what it has that others do not, they are very proud people - proud of their country, accomplishments, children and their friends.

this pride also extends to the neighborhood they live in, similar to the soccer team they support - they will side fervently with their neighborhood whenever the opportunity presents itself.

for the vast majority of cariocas there is no distinction between the neighborhood that they grew up in, and the neighborhood in which they live - this is partly because moving away from home requires great financial independence, a luxury which many do not have the privilege to enjoy until one is much older or is married.
