cariocas have a strong tendency towards communal living as is evidenced through their sharing of advice, food, shelter, and difficult situations - Nowhere is this more apparent than in the favelas, where the idea of sharing, helping neighbors, interacting with family and friends is ingrained into everyday life where, in fact, in the face of adversity camaraderie has taken root.   

cariocas are especially generous with food and drink - when purchasing either of the two locals normally offer whatever they have selected, to the individuals around them - during meal time when another person enters the room, they will be offered food, in which it is equally important for the person being offered to accept.

this idea of sharing also extends to sharing an experience or an idea in conversation - on a basic level, agreeing means both people have something in common and it may mean they share similar values or beliefs - on a deeper level saying yes means the other individual is accepting and affirming the other person which, to a carioca, this is the highest form of respect given.
