at a glance

this philosophy is ubiquitous in rio - the prevailing point of view is that in order to create a happy, warm and kind world, one must show warmth and kindness to the people around them.

perhaps, cariocas' social values in general, can be described when one is enjoying the simple concept of sharing.  a typical carioca act of sharing is  when one is enjoying a meal and another person enters the room, they will be offered some food, in which it is equally important for the person being offered to accept.

this idea of sharing also extends to sharing an experience or an idea in conversation - so, on a basic level, agreeing means both people have something in common - it may mean that they share similar values or beliefs. more deeply, by saying yes, if the other is accepting and affirming the other person - to a carioca, this is the highest form of respect you can give.    arrow-back     arrow-forward
