The military police of Rio de Janeiro is the state controlled institution responsible for general street patrolling and conflict supression - Coordinated with the individual city halls and under the command of the governor of the state, they safeguard the patrimony and lives of citizens under the motto “To protect and serve”.

It is greatly due to their efforts under the Sérgio Cabral administration that the UPPs were implemented and enforced in the communities of Rio, rendering them a much more peaceful day to day life.

The PM - RJ represents the most numerous police force in Rio as it is the primary responsible for carioca's and fluminense's safety inside urban perimeter and in state highways.
