august - father's day (dia dos pais) is an annual holiday celebrated around the world to honor fathers and grandfathers and all they do for their families.

although father's day may occur on different days of the year, the majority of countries recognize it as falling on the third sunday of june, with brazil choosing to celebrate it three months after mother's day on the second sunday of august.

the day coincides with the celebration of saint joachim, patron saint of families and also the roman catholic day of godfather's.

as with most celebrations around the world, it is the opportunity to let brazilian men know how important they are, and also the perfect way to gather relatives and enjoy the day with the extended family.

in rio de janeiro, family is extremely important, and any and all festivities associated with family and family values are deeply heartfelt and widely celebrated. on august 25th, soldier's day is celebrated across brasil - The date commemorates all members of the Brazilian Army, and was established in honor of Luis Alves de Lima e Silva, patron of the Brazilian Army.

born on August 25, 1803,  at just 20 years of age Luis Alves de Lima e Silva was already captain, and fought to defended Brazil both in domestic and foreign battles.

in rio de janeiro, on this day an interesting weapons exhibition is held at the forte de copacabana.

the fort is a landmark spot not to be missed during a visit to rio - conveniently located at the very beginning of copacabana beach, this fort has much to offer to any visitor, may that be a trip back in time, of a coffee with a view.

this week is the ideal chance to see the monthly changing of the guard at the monument to the soldiers killed in world war ii (monumeno ao pracinhas)

there, on the first sunday of every month the army, the navy and the air force hold a joint ceremony, with a band, and a small parade.
