at a glance

Between the 1960s and 1990s a gang war ravaged the community, leading to causing great suffering and adverse social conditions for residents. The film 'Cidade de Deus', directed by Fernando Meirelles and starring genuine favela residents, brought this social strife to the forefront of media and political attention, and was arguably a springboard for great social activism and change.

A pacifying police force was established in 2009 which has led to reduced gun crime and homicide rates. Non-governmental organizations also work tirelessly in the region to improve social conditions and implement educational, vocational and cultural projects for residents. There is an online community 'Portal' which brings together the activities carried out by a wide variety of institutions in the area, providing information on news, events and campaigns.
