at a glance

The Morro underwent a process of pacification in 2010, and has been promised a variety of progressive social initiatives in its wake, including the provision of two lifts to facilitate ascent of the steep hillside. It is currently largely populated by immigrants from the Northeast of Brazil, as well as an Afro-Brazilian community, containing more than 4,000 inhabitants.

The community is home to the FAVELARTE project which promotes human rights and self esteem in the development of artistic and cultural products, achieved through child and adolescent education, art exhibitions and workshops.

In 2014 the community also played host to a Startup Weekend in which global leaders and entrepreneurs provided lectures and workshops to inspire and empower individuals and groups in the community to form businesses and social initiatives.
