furthermore it is important to avoid taking photographs of garbage, damaged property or poorly maintained structures,  steering clear of anything that may be controversial or embarrassing to members of a favela.

Residents should not be made to feel as though their living conditions are being judged or criticized as this creates a distinct power imbalance which stands in the way of cultural exchange.

much better and more appropriate subjects would be views from favelas high-up in the hills, nature, arts and graffiti, cultural and sporting centers, locals bars and restaurants, markets, churches,  performances, historical landmarks, or anything explicitly inviting or set-up to be photographed.
