photographs make a popular souvenirs for many visitors and mostpeople are keen to take photographs during  favela visits - this is perfectly acceptable, but must be approached with a sensitivity and awareness that takes into account how this is experienced by locals.

one must consider how residents of favelas will feel about themselves and their communities being the subject of photographs - and what it is exactly that they feel the photographer is trying to capture.

there are a number of situations that are not deemed appropriate for photographing. visitors should not take photos of people unless they are expressly invited to do so by the individuals in question. similarly, no photographs should be taken of children, people at work, people taking care of their homes or performing domestic work, of business transactions or the interior of homes. To photograph these without explicit consent would be an invasion of people's sense of personal space and privacy as well as objectifying other people's lives.
