many tourists come to rio de janeiro with the intention to visit one of the world-famous favelas. in fact, these neighborhoods have become top destinations, part and parcel of a tourist itinerary which includes beaches, mountains, and art galleries.

yet, classifying favelas as just another touristic destination undermines their cultural and social importnace. visiting these unique communities is something that requires a reasonable degree of sensitivity and cultural competence.

favelas should not be viewed simply as 'attraction,' as they are living neighborhoods. they have been home to families for generations and are rich in history and traditions. part of fascination with favelas today is also what caused the residents a great deal of suffering and difficulties in the past. this is something that should be kept in mind at all times by all who choose to explore one of these areas.
