the story behind the name is rather comical - a sign posted to the hill ascent  stated: 'soon at this site, mangueira hat factory'; in reality, the factory was to be built on a different mountain but, in a typically humorous carioca fashion, the name remained.

chapéu mangueira's most beloved and celebrated attraction is the trail to the top - those who ascend to the very highest peak of the mountain, are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the city including christ on corcovado, sugar loaf, and the botafogo cove.

due to its small size, the community is more limited in terms of commerce and trade as compared to other favelas, but it does have one school and two kindergartens, shared with its babilônia sibling.
