the paper novos conflitos na cidade: a upp e o processo de urbanização na favela (new conflicts in the city: the upp and the urnanization proces of favelas) by professor neiva vieira da cunha and by professor marco antônio da silva mello,  discusses some of the effects on the everyday lives of favela residents, where pacification police units have been deployed. based on fieldwork conducted insanta marta, it seeks to highlight the conflicts generated by urban regularization and the gradual replacement of 'informal' practices for access to services and their implications for the process of formalizing a recognized 'address in the city'.

another investigation of the pacification process, written in 2012, by Marcelo Baumann Burgos, Luiz Fernando Almeida Pereira, Mariana Cavalcanti, Mario Brum and Mauro Amoroso, the article O Efeito UPP na Percepção dos Moradores das Favelas (The Effect of the UPP in the Perception of Favela Residents)  analyzes the perceptions of residents of four favelas occupied by UPPs (Pacifying Police Units). The paper is particularly concerned with how UPPs impact residents' daily lives, their future projects, their relations to the so-called formal city, and their associational life.
