from the 1960s onward flores has also hosted a base belonging to the brazilian marines. both these installations and the adjacent museum are accessed through the highway br-101.  

to the north of flores are the engenho and tavares islands. to the west there are several important installations, including several dockyards, like aliança and mauá, and the large niterói harbor.
