at a glance

this became the site of the parque da cidade, or the park of the city, occupying 470 thousand meters filled with gardens, green spaces, lakes, woodsy paths, a floral reserve and the museum of the city (museu da cidade)in the old home of the marquis of são vicente.

gávea is demarcated by the two monumental walls of dois irmãos hill and its rocky 539 meter peaks. the largo das tres vendas, where the santos dumont praça is located now, was the main reference point for the old neighborhood and where old trams used to go in 1872.   by 1904 the trams were already electric and were climbing rua marques de são vicente until the street's end.

the neighborhood's forested area would be divided among the city's wealthy landowners as the years passed, with joão borges and his family members buying a significant proportion. arrow-back      arrow-forward
