at a glance |
Ilha do Governador only began urban development in 1838 when regular steam boat links were created between the island and the mainland. The area was hence integrated and utilized for coffee cultivation and industrial ceramic production. In the early 20th Century trains arrived in the region and in 1940 a bridge was inaugurated connecting the island to the mainland - both of these developments improved mobility and accelerated urbanization. In the same century military units were installed which are still prolific to the current day. |
