The Área de Proteção Ambiental (e Recuperação Urbana) do Jaquiá, or the APARU Reserve, is an area of urban environmental protection and is the largest area of protected mangrove in the city. It is located in Cacuia, on the southern coast of the island, lining the guanabara bay.

the reserve is home to the Z-10 fishing colony as well as Centro de Educação Ambiental Aparu do Jaquiá (APARU Environmental Education Center), which offers children and adults trails of the mangroves in which they are introduced to the diverse and exotic flora and fauna that populates the reserve.
