starting in the 1970's, also due to waste from the greater rio de janeiro being discharged in the bay, the level of pollution in the area increased - making many of the beaches on the island unsuitable for swimming. in the last few years, as the economy of rio de janeiro grew, government funds and new technologies have been aimed at restoring the water of the baía de guanabara to its former splendor. some tangible results can already be seen - continuous efforts to maintain the cleanliness of the shores, and new policies controlling the waste discarded in the bay, generated great optimism. according to many, the 21st century will see the beaches of ilha do governador back as an important asset for tourism and for the residents of the island. |
