It is also important to avoid taking photographs of garbage, damaged property, or poorly maintained structures, steering clear of anything that may be controversial or embarrassing to members of a favela - Residents should not be made to feel as though their living conditions are being judged or criticized as this creates an imbalance. much better and more appropriate subjects would be views from favelas high-up in the hills, nature, arts and graffiti, cultural and sporting centers, locals bars and restaurants, markets, churches, performances, historical landmarks, or anything explicitly inviting or set-up to be photographed. as discretion should be a factor in anyone's visit to a favela, only small cameras should be used - walking around with large equipment and zoom lenses is something we strongly advise against doing - In essence, photography should be discreet and respectful - The photographer is not a journalist but a guest in someone's home, and should hence treat the hosts with deference and gratitude for their hospitality. |
