Many of Rio's wealthy and elite have recently purchased property on the chic and gentrified slopes of Vidigal, enticed by the community's incomparable views and zany charm. Many of these properties have been converted into hotels, hostels and guesthouses to cater to the influx of tourists looking to immerse themselves in the community's culture for a few nights. There are an impressive array of up-market hostels and hotels, such as the Hotel Mirante do Arvrão, which has five suites, five bedrooms and a bar, and is the largest private investment in the favela. Favela Enterprise is a for-profit social organization which organizes culturally immersive homestays, private apartment rentals and hostel stays to travelers, students and volunteers in Vidigal. Large portions of the money they receive gets reinvested into the NGOs or goes directly to homestay families, which boosts the local economy and benefits the community. | arpoador | |||
