not far from it, offering trails with spectacular views,  in 1992 the parque estadual da serra da tiririca (peset), was named world biosphere reserve by unesco. beyond its natural attractions, niterói also has several historical hallmarks, products of its long and eventful history.

the igreja são loureço dos índios (church of saint laurence of the indios) is certainly the oldest cultural building in the city, and one of the most historically significant. other important churches to be found are the basilica to nossa senhora auxiliadora, and the church of são sebastião do itaipú.
