pontal's rock is a prominent hill surrounded by the ocean and connected to the neighborhood by  pontal's beach, which extends westward and ends at itupuã's rock, beyond which lays the smaller macumba beach.

vendors are rare in these relatively remote areas, particularly on weekdays when the beaches are for the most part deserted, it is therefore important to bring sufficient food, water and supplies to ensure an all round enjoyable day at the beach.

recreio is also home to the only natural swimming pool in the city of rio - an almost unknown rock formation that fills with ocean water depending on the tides, and it is called 'praia do secreto', or 'beach of the secret'.
