Parque Ecológico Natural Municipal Chico Mendes (Chico Mendes Municipal Natural Ecological Park) is an environmentally protected area of greenery, which is ideal for leisure and exploration, located in the western neighborhood of recreio. Its trees, marshes and waters provide ample material for admiration of local vegetation and wildlife, which are typical to the forests and salt marshes of the region.

the reserve was opened in 1989 with the purpose of preserving the natural habitats of animal species and rare plants. it was named after Chico Mendes, a leading environmentalist who tragically lost his life by being assassinated in 1988.
