included in the diverse array of life and colors, are capuchin monkeys, raccoons, iguanas, lizards, orchids and bromeliads, amongst many more.

as an enticing peak, in one of the world most inviting tropical forests, the pedra da gávea is a particularly popular hiking and mountaineering spot, becoming an icon for the sport.

whilst there are many different routes to the top, the usual trail begins in the depth of the forest, with a stone path that was built by slaves - the hike is considered as the most difficult in rio, as it is steep all the way to the top of the 842 meters high summit, with some rock climbing included as well.

once at the summit of pedra da gávea hikers are treated to 360-degree views of the entire city.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
