another park of great historical significance is the   campo de santana,  where dom pedro's announcement of brazil's independence occurred on september 7, 1822 - here dom pedro i (peter the first) of portugal, the founder and first emperor of brazil announced the successful and bloodless establishment of the new empire of brazil. later, it was the second emperor of brazil dom pedro ii, who selected auguste françois marie glaziou, a french landscape architect to design the park.

it was named the 'pulmão da capital do império' (lung of the capital of the empire) and, interestingly, this garden was actually one of the most important 'touristic destinations' in rio de janeiro until the end of the 19th century - at a time where the beaches were not considered interesting and most international visitors would visit the gardens and french architecture of rio while riding on horse carriages.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
