at a glance

southward lies the almirante barroso avenue, which begins on praça do expedicionário and, in its turn, accesses the praça floriano, known as cinelândia. it is filled with theaters and cinemas, the church of the venerable third order of são francisco of penitence and, at its very end, the renowned metropolitan cathedral of saint sebastian of rio de janeiro - the cultural richness of this particular area is unrivalled in rio and there are many more siginficant sites to be found in this historical neighborhood.

many historically significant events, including dom pedro's announcement of brazil's independence, occurred at campo de santana - on september 7, 1822, dom pedro i (peter the first) of spain, the founder and first emperor of brazil, announced the successful and peaceful establishment of the new empire of brazil. later, the second emperor of brazil dom pedro ii, selected auguste françois marie glaziou, a french landscape architect to design the park.      arrow-back      arrow-forward
