many historically significant events, including dom pedro's announcement of brazil's independence, occurred at campo de santana - on september 7, 1822, dom pedro i (peter the first) of spain, the founder and first emperor of brazil, announced the successful and peaceful establishment of the new empire of brazil. later, the second emperor of brazil dom pedro ii, selected auguste françois marie glaziou, a french landscape architect to design the park.
