at a glance

centered over the paciência ridge, the paciência neighborhood covers a wide area in the west zone of rio de janeiro. it is squeezed between the santa cruz neighborhood, to the west, and cosmos and campo grande, to the east.

in the early 19th century the region held the paciência mill, a large ranch dedicated to the plantation and processing of sugarcane. located just beside the santa cruz royal road, it belonged to the landlord joão francisco da silva, who recurrently housed the royal family in his own residence.

by the end of that century the railroad arrived in the west zone, and a train station was built in paciência. this caused the arrival of the first settlers in the region, however, real development of the area, in respect to the urbanization efforts and general population growth, would only happen after the first half of the 20th century. arrow-back      arrow-forward
