at a glance

The Cosmos bairro (neighborhood) is a predominantly residential area located in the zona oeste (West Zone) of Rio de Janeiro. It is relatively peaceful and calm, served by a few important access routes bordering the bairros of paciência, santa cruz, guaratiba, inhoaíba and campo grande.

The region once belonged to the Engenho da Paciência, or 'Paciência Mill', which processed sugarcane and related derivatives. The region remained largely undeveloped and with few residences until the early 20th century, when the Companhia Imobiliária Cosmos, or 'Cosmos Real Estate Company', developed a large allotment in the region, called Vila Igaratá.

In 1928 the Ramal de Mangaratiba, or 'Mangaratiba Railroad', was built facilitating better access to the region, and the Companhia Imobiliária Cosmos assigned some of the allotment for the construction of the Cosmos train station, thus giving the name to the neighborhood. arrow-back      arrow-forward
