located in the west zone of rio, barra da tijuca, commonly called 'barra' is an elegant and recently developed district with wide avenues, modern buildings, luxurious condos, and a sparkling, upscale night life. mostly populated by medium to high income residents, this district combines spectacular nature and large open spaces with luxurious shops and residences.

originally inhabited by the indigenous tupi, 'tijuca' meant in their language 'stagnant water', referring to the many lagoons of the region. barra is the neighborhood that most grew in the past few years, becoming possibly the most modern district of the city.
